Population

The New Haven-Milford Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/increased from 744,948 in 1970 to 862,477 in 2010. That was an increase of 15.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 60,768 in 1970 to 102,664 in 2010. That was an increase of 68.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 8.2 percent to 11.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 11.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in the first two periods, replaced by NIM in the most current period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM became principal factor for added population in all periods, and the sole source in the most recent period.
